Construction
of UCR Take-Out Bee Traps
Shaping cones for one-way entrances
 |
Starting with a piece of aluminum window screening
about 3.5 inches square, push the center down to begin the cone. |
| |
|
 |
With the screening on a table top, push the
sides inward to finish the cone. |
 |
Form a hole in the end of the cone by working
the point of a pencil through it. |
 |
Trim off the corners of the square. If producing
cones in quantity, this step can be eliminated, and screening
conserved, by cutting squares on the bias (diagonally) so that
the corners, rather than the sides, pull in as the cone is formed. |
Assembling the traps
 |
Bore holes in opposite sides of the trap, about
0.5 inches in diameter. For large scale assembly, a punch would
be quicker. |
 |
Staple cones over each of the holes, The base
of the cone could also be dipped in hot-melt glue and set in
place. |
 |
Staple a dental wick to the inner flap to receive
the pheromone. In use, the pheromone is applied, insecticidal
soap solution is poured into the bottom, the cover is closed,
and the trap is hung from its wire bail. Bending the bail slightly
upward in the center insures that the trap hangs straight. |
